I can read in your face that your feelings are driving you wild
Love-Taker, don’t you mess around with me
You know I’d never ask you to change
I don’t give a hoot about what you think
All the times that I’ve cried, All that’s wasted, it’s all inside
Give me some rope, tie me to dream, give me the hope to run out of steam
Race the sun, pray for nothing warm
Crushing, destroying the light is fading; Valhalla is calling your name
Glock 9 to SK if you want to beef
Machines to save our lives, Machines dehumanize
Take pictures in your mind of your childhood room
Because it’s us against the world
Better to be hated than loved for what you’re not
We R who we R
I’m now becoming my own self-fulfilled prophecy
My shadow’s the only one that walks beside me
Oh, but if I had the stars from the darkest night
Hide my head, I want to drown my sorrow
There must be some kind of way out of here
This life don’t last forever
I’m so sick of words.
You’ve got to reach out a little more
Put your troubles aside and start living
Live your life with arms wide open
I’m quick learning lessons from the devil,
but can’t decide whether I arrived or was contrived;
I settled down, a twisted up frown;
I am one big myoma that thinks short people are just the same as you and I
You steal away the rain, and just like that
You know to keep your hopes up high and your head down low
I see that. Give me time now you know I’m gonna be there
Back where I belong, yeah I never felt so strong
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart
I would go though all of this pain, But you won’t do the same
I’m on my way to the Promised Land
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth
That you’re drowning in the water
Clear liquor and cloudy eyed, too early to say goodnight
Our lives made up of choices (some without appeal)
If this is what we’ve got, then what we’ve got is gold
We’ll just keep running from tomorrow with our lips locked
I’ve been thinking bout everyone, everyone you look so empty
Throw away all of your problems ‘cause right now it’s party time
Have we got a show for you!
Bad decisions, that’s alright
Jealousy’s the cousin, the cousin of greed
You’re gonna catch a cold from the ice inside your soul
Fly, oh my, it’s a little bit scary
I have spent all my years in believing in you
I used to do the same for an answer to my question
Till I figured out there ain’t a man who has possession
Blessing in disguise, but I am not hiding who I am, open your eyes
And you say we’re too young, but maybe you’re too old to remember
To the doubtful I demand take me as I am
My hands are bananas
What the hell is going on?
You think you’re loving, but I want to be free
Now it’s departed. I’m broken hearted
Just a spoon full of sugar makes it better real quick
She’s got her head up in the sky
But her feet are on the ground
Band on the run
Band on the run.
I take it that Aldous is very anti-communist. I think that he tried to show the horrors of communism through Brave New World. I found it funny that he would compare the Catholic Church to Communist governments just because they don't believe in birth control. I do think the main message he is trying to spread about that is if we don't start to change then we are going to over-inhabit the Earth. I personally don't think the Catholic church is like communism. He brought up a good point in his interview when he mentioned how drugs can make people feel certain ways. I think back in his day, drugs like that were kinda of frowned apon. Of course today they seem to be completely acceptable in society, but that's just because of the difference in what's acceptable. I think he might have been a bit disturbed himself to have written Brave New World. In the long run, I think Aldous was just trying to warn to human race about what we are cappable of.
ReplyDelete-It's so odd to see an interviewer smoke during an interview!
ReplyDelete-I have similar feelings to many of the issues the Brave New World's author mentioned
-Right now drugs can drastically impact people's behavior, so it's not far out of the realm of possibilities that medicine can be used to control others, just to control them
-Overpopulation of the human race is an issue. More and more children are born everyday and survive, and people have a longer life span. But, our resources are not growing at the same rate, and our living space has not grown to accommodate the growth of the human race.
-With overpopulation, I feel that gives more chaotic nature to people and more craziness could happen
-As they mentioned Hitler used propaganda, and our government now has more abilities in propaganda then before so what exactly could this be used for? Anything.
-I feel as though some people may take this as if we should be anti government entirely, but government is necessary it is just also necessary that people do not blindly follow or believe others, they need to question and make their own choices.
-I'm not sure how I feel on his remarks of "over-organization", is it really a problem for there to be too much organization?
-On the remarks about Catholicism and Communism, I think that this works for anything where there are semi-extreme or strict parts of one society or way of life that pushes people to other extremes, why can't there be happy mediums?
-In all from this video I got the impression that everyone should be aware of the knowledge and power of world, not fearful, and from that knowledge be aware of everything that is happening in the world

ethics, shmethics. everyone else that commented is wrong, even though i didnt read what they wrote :))))))))))))))))
ReplyDeleteI personally found this interview very interesting. In the first part, Huxley talks about how overpopulation, in his mind, is a strong force that could eventually deminish our freedom, because the rate of death is going down as time goes on. I agree with his opinion on how television is distracting people not just in the United States but in all countries with households that can afford it. I don't even watch TV a lot anymore because it's kind of a waste of time. This video is kind of hard to understand so I didn't get a lot of details, but I could tell that he was also talking about how it could be possible that the government could use drugs to control us, and that's an idea that of thought of many times. Like, people give Tobacco companies millions of dollars a year just on cigarettes alone. Millions of people just in America could practically buy a small country with all of the money they spend on cigarettes every year. That's the reason I will never ever smoke cigarettes, because my money would be going to the worst people in America, who need it the least.
ReplyDeleteI agree that freedom is necessary for productive society, and it's kind of scary that what's going on in "Brave New World" could realistically, one day happen.
but the rest was kinda hard to follow.
So yeeah, that's my opinion.:)
I watched them out of order, so this might not make much chronological sense. It seems that he stresses individualism a bit too much. Freedom is all well and good but people must remember that they ARE part of a larger group that operates for them. If there is too much individualism, then the government is just a joke. Sacrifices must be made. On another note, I think that Communism is given too bad of a reputation. Communism is only bad when it is despotic, resembling more of a dictatorship than what Karl, not Bernard, Marx imagined. People tend to assume that Communism inherently deprives citzens of rights, which is not true. The point of pure Communism is not to suppress individuals or to create terrible dictatorships. While some sacrifices must be made, they are often "made up". What I am trying to say is that associating something with Communism (i.e. the Catholic Church) is not necesarily a negative thing.
ReplyDeleteThe beginning of what is the first part seems so disgustingly 1950's America. Everyone is going about whining that their are threats to their freedoms. The only thing that truly threatens those freedoms is the fact that people do fear for their loss. People like Huxley just perpetuate fears (in his case, loss of freedom and Soviet aggression) and do nothing to really help them. The only way they are useful is if the people that absorb such material are educated and realistic enough to view them from a disconnected sense and won't just panic and reach for their guns. Freedom is such a loaded word and is used far too liberally in regards to perceived threats. Take terrorism. Let's be honest, no Taliban nutcase in Afghanistan poses any threat to our freedoms. No one is going to bomb Berea. That's just absurd. Certain Patriot Laws enacted in response to those fears take more freedoms than the jihadis do.
I am all for modern medicine, which Huxley says that could be used to control people. I think everything can be used "recreationally" or for very good uses. For example, Vicodin and Morphine (morphine less so now) are used in hospitals with positive results. However, people illegally take those drugs for illegal, "pleasure" purposes. I'm not going to talk about marijuana, but just throwing that out there.
Though I thought much of what Huxley said was a bit extreme, what he was saying about advertising, mainly political advertising, seemed very relevant. His thoughts made a great deal of sense, though I do not think that they will ever be realized, even less so now then when Huxley was speaking of. However, I feel that the connection between "toothpaste advertisements" and dictatorships is very far-fetched. Even if one man controls what toothpaste I use or what type of hotdog I eat, is that so terrible that I should rise up against the advertisement industry? What is the big deal? Especially since I can conciously decide not to follow what the commercials say. In fact, I fast forward through much of them anyways. And if all children are "brainwashed", how is there any competition at all?
Finally, what is so bad about living in a totalitatian state if you are constantly happy? What is the point of having freedoms if you do not use them?

ReplyDeleteI think Huxley means to talk about how technology and overpopulation is eventually going to change society for the worse. He mentions that techonolgy takes away creativty and imagination, he uses Hitler and and communism as an example. It seems pretty obvious that the intervier doesn't like Huxley, because he think he's a communist and a drug pusher, due to the fact that the Cold war just started not too long ago. He doesn't relieze that a Brave New World in very anti- communist. It just blames technology and over-population. That's what i got out of it. :D
ReplyDeleteI thought that Huxley addressed many of the concerns that we still have today. Although we are obviously not living his "Brave New World", topics came up like overpopulation, drug use, and propaganda that are still relative. Btw, I cannot imagine living my life through Huxley's eyes. He seems like he lived in constant fear and mistrust of large administrations and the use of technology. I think its true that technology can be used in "bad" ways, it is also often used for good ones too, like connecting people, information, and awareness. Anyways, I kind of agree with his views on overpopulation. The way the world is headed, we're going to kill off all of our resources, erase nature, and kill all the animals. But this is very easy to generalize. Not ALL of humanity is going to, and in fact, there are various organizations that are there to help stop this. So I dont think it will ever get to that extreme. And while its true that a governing entity could bend the masses to his/her will by propaganda, it would have to be an extremely dumb population for ALL of them to fall prey. There will always be the outliers, the ones who wont fall for it, and I think thats what will stop any major power from taking over the entire world.
ReplyDeleteI thought that this interview was interesting, but hard to understand. I usually dont see interviews of authors so it was cool to see the thinking behind the novel instead of just looking at it in my point of view. I think that Aldous is a very intelligent man by how much thought that he puts into the details of how the propaganda and technology of the future are going to turn the world into a controlled communtity in half a century. I agree with him when he says that overorganization is a force that will effect the world. As technology devlopes and becomes more complicated, the more orgaization is needed. I saw a commercial today for a car that had built in Facebook status updates that could be read allowed. At first I thought that it was cool, but then I was wondering why you would actually want that in your car because that could and probably would distract you from driving. I can see hands free devices, but Facebook in a car seems a bit much. The overorganization of the technology of the vehical is taking over and my dad made the comment that the engineers must be mad. This, I thought, was a good example of the overpopulation of technology was taking over.
ReplyDeleteyet again, I am impressed...You all are AMAZING:)

ReplyDeleteThis was very hard to understand. It was interesting to hear how much detail he put into the book. I wish i was that creative to this out-of-the box like that. Overall from what the author is saying i get the impression that he is telling everyone to not fear or be afraid of the knowledge that is out there. I know some people who have let drugs influence their lifes and it basically takes over their life if they dont do anything to try and change that, which can be hard to do. Medicine is the same way be i can control others. Our living space is not growing any where near to the extent of our population. Neither our our resources. I think overpopulation is just going to get worse and worse because our population is never going to stop growing. Just how there are more and more teen pregnancies which adds to the population.
ReplyDeletePropaganda is being used more and more and it is being used for ANYTHING. Just how Hitler used it as they said in the video. I feel like our government is just like propaganda in the sense that they try to make a majority think this way or vote for this person, this is leading to less 'individuality' and many more people are starting to go to the 'normal' or following the crowd. What is normal anyway?
