I can read in your face that your feelings are driving you wild
Love-Taker, don’t you mess around with me
You know I’d never ask you to change
I don’t give a hoot about what you think
All the times that I’ve cried, All that’s wasted, it’s all inside
Give me some rope, tie me to dream, give me the hope to run out of steam
Race the sun, pray for nothing warm
Crushing, destroying the light is fading; Valhalla is calling your name
Glock 9 to SK if you want to beef
Machines to save our lives, Machines dehumanize
Take pictures in your mind of your childhood room
Because it’s us against the world
Better to be hated than loved for what you’re not
We R who we R
I’m now becoming my own self-fulfilled prophecy
My shadow’s the only one that walks beside me
Oh, but if I had the stars from the darkest night
Hide my head, I want to drown my sorrow
There must be some kind of way out of here
This life don’t last forever
I’m so sick of words.
You’ve got to reach out a little more
Put your troubles aside and start living
Live your life with arms wide open
I’m quick learning lessons from the devil,
but can’t decide whether I arrived or was contrived;
I settled down, a twisted up frown;
I am one big myoma that thinks short people are just the same as you and I
You steal away the rain, and just like that
You know to keep your hopes up high and your head down low
I see that. Give me time now you know I’m gonna be there
Back where I belong, yeah I never felt so strong
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart
I would go though all of this pain, But you won’t do the same
I’m on my way to the Promised Land
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth
That you’re drowning in the water
Clear liquor and cloudy eyed, too early to say goodnight
Our lives made up of choices (some without appeal)
If this is what we’ve got, then what we’ve got is gold
We’ll just keep running from tomorrow with our lips locked
I’ve been thinking bout everyone, everyone you look so empty
Throw away all of your problems ‘cause right now it’s party time
Have we got a show for you!
Bad decisions, that’s alright
Jealousy’s the cousin, the cousin of greed
You’re gonna catch a cold from the ice inside your soul
Fly, oh my, it’s a little bit scary
I have spent all my years in believing in you
I used to do the same for an answer to my question
Till I figured out there ain’t a man who has possession
Blessing in disguise, but I am not hiding who I am, open your eyes
And you say we’re too young, but maybe you’re too old to remember
To the doubtful I demand take me as I am
My hands are bananas
What the hell is going on?
You think you’re loving, but I want to be free
Now it’s departed. I’m broken hearted
Just a spoon full of sugar makes it better real quick
She’s got her head up in the sky
But her feet are on the ground
Band on the run
Band on the run.
Honors English II
A Separate Peace
ReplyDeleteM- As in this novel, many writers frequently use weather to set a mood. Imagine the hallways of Midpark just before or after the first bell rings on a winter morning. Try to describe the scene and, in doing so, try to convey a mood. Include sounds and smells in your description, as well as visual images. Remember: an author’s tone can affect the mood!
T- Because of his personal charm, Finny can get away with things that cause other people to get into trouble. Discuss a situation like this that you have seen. How did you feel about that person? How about the person that allows him to get away with things?
W- How much do you think you are like Finny? If you find him a likable person, what is it you like about him? If you find him unlikable, what is it you don’t like about him? Do you share any of these desirable or undesirable traits or are you and Finny foil characters for one another? Discuss
TH- Gene admits that on a number of occasions, he envies Finny and resents all of his successes. If you were Gene, and Finny was your friend, do you think you would feel the same as Gene or differently? Have you ever been in a similar relationship? Discuss.
The Catcher in the Rye
ReplyDeleteM- Holden knows he is not coming back to Pency after the Christmas holiday break because the school kicked him out for flunking 4/5 subjects. He writes, “They gave me frequent warning to start applying myself- especially around midterms, when my parents came up for a conference with Old Thurmer- but I didn’t do it/” Some people, myself included, do not have much sympathy for people who are capable of doing work, but don’t do it. How do you feel about it?
T- Critics applaud J.D. Salinger for the way his descriptions of daily life accurately reflect the personalities of the characters. Holden describes his roommate, Stradlater, by describing his razor. “ Stradlater was more of a secret slob. He always looked all right, Stradlater, but for instance, you should’ve seen the razor he shaved himself with. It was always rusty as hell and full of lather and hairs and crap. He never cleaned it or anything. He always looked good when he was finished fixing himself up, but he was a secret slob anyway if you knew him the way that I did.” As Holden did, write a short paragraph (half page) describing an inanimate object belonging to you. Try to copy Salinger’s writing style in your paragraph. Try to make the description you write accurately reflect one of your personality traits.
W- Choose 1 prompt: Holden writes about his brother Allie’s baseball mitt. The mitt has poems written all over it. In the middle of this description, Holden calmly states that Allie is dead. What is your impression of Allie? What was your reaction to this passage when you read it? Discuss. OR: Holden goes into Ackley’s room after his fight with Stradlater and says “I felt so lonesome, all of a sudden. I almost wished I was dead.” Have you ever felt this way? Known anyone who has? What advice would you give Holden, or anyone else, to help him put his loneliness into perspective, so that he knows his sadness is temporary, but death is permanent?
Th- Choose 1 prompt: Holden pretends to be Rudolf Schmidt when he talks to Mrs. Morrow. Some critics believe Holden does this because he feels more comfort- able being someone else than he does as Holden Caulfield. If, like most people, you have an “alter ego” (other self), write a scenario in which your alter ego is the main character. OR
Mrs. Morrow seems to be unaware of Holden’s lies. However, this story is told entirely from Holden’s point of view. Do you think it is possible that Mrs. Morrow knows Holden is lying? Assuming that she knows Holden hasn’t told her the truth, write a letter from Mrs. Morrow to her son Ernest, in which she relates to him her version of this incident.
"The Catcher in the Rye" Week 3
ReplyDeleteCH 18/19 M- At the end of this chapter Holden threatens suicide. "If there is ever another war, I'm going to sit right the hell on top of it (the atomic bomb)." Holden's threat is so exaggerated that it is difficult to take him seriously. Have you ever known anyone who threatens suicide as part of his/her normal conversation? Under what circumstandes do you think these threats should be taken seriously?
20/21 T- Some critics suggest that Holden idealizes his brother Allie. If they are correct, why do you suppose Holden stops visiting Allie's grave? Write a letter from Holden to his brother and tell him why you don't visit anymore.
22/23 W- Holden tells Phoebe that he wants to catch little children who are playing in the rye before they fall off a cliff. What does he mean by this?
24 TH- The end of this chapter is controversial. Some readers believe that Mr. Antoline is making a homosexual pass at Holden. Wothers believe Mr. A is merely expressing his concern for Holden. What is your opinion? Discuss.
